Caring for your piece

Made to last a lifetime — if treated like one.

Fine jewellery is built to be worn, but it rewards attention. A few simple habits will keep your piece looking the way it looked the day it arrived.

General care

01

Remove before water

Take off your jewellery before swimming, showering, or washing dishes. Chlorine, saltwater, and soap residue degrade metal finishes and can loosen stone settings over time.

02

Last on, first off

Put your jewellery on after applying perfume, moisturiser, and hairspray. The chemicals in these products dull metal surfaces and can cloud stones. Remove it before changing or working with your hands.

03

Store separately

Store each piece in its own pouch or compartment. Metal-on-metal contact causes scratching, and harder stones like diamonds can scratch softer metals and other gems.

04

Professional check-up

Have your piece professionally inspected once a year. A jeweller will check prong integrity, stone security, and overall condition — catching minor issues before they become significant ones.

Care by metal

Gold (18k Yellow, White & Rose)

Gold is durable but not impervious. Clean with warm water, a drop of mild dish soap, and a soft-bristle brush (a baby toothbrush works well). Rinse thoroughly and pat dry with a lint-free cloth. Avoid ultrasonic cleaners for pieces with pavé or fragile stone settings.

White gold is plated with rhodium to give it its bright finish. This plating will wear over time — particularly on rings that are worn daily. Replating is a routine, inexpensive service any jeweller can perform.

Platinum

Platinum develops a natural patina over time — a slightly matte, satin quality that many collectors prefer. If you want to restore the original high polish, a professional buff takes minutes. Clean in the same way as gold: warm soapy water, soft brush, rinse, dry. Platinum is highly durable and resists tarnish naturally.

Sterling Silver

Silver tarnishes when exposed to air and certain chemicals — this is natural and reversible. Clean regularly with a silver polishing cloth or a solution of warm water and mild soap. For heavier tarnish, a paste of baking soda and water applied gently with a soft cloth works well. Store silver in an airtight pouch when not wearing it to slow tarnishing significantly.

Care by stone

Diamonds

The hardest natural material. Clean regularly — diamonds attract grease and lose brilliance quickly. Warm soapy water and a soft brush restore their original sparkle. Ultrasonic cleaners are generally safe for solitaires but not for pavé or fragile settings.

Sapphires & Rubies

Very durable (9 on the Mohs scale). Warm soapy water and a soft brush. Avoid ultrasonic cleaners if the stone has been heat-treated, which is common. When in doubt, clean by hand.

Emeralds

More delicate than sapphires. Most emeralds are oiled to enhance clarity — avoid ultrasonic cleaners and steam cleaning entirely. Clean gently with a damp cloth only. Handle with care; emeralds can chip at corners.

Pearls

Organic and porous — the most delicate stone type. Wipe with a soft, slightly damp cloth after each wear. Never use ultrasonic cleaners, steam, or any chemical cleaner. Store flat or loosely coiled, never hanging, to prevent the silk thread from stretching.

Opals & Turquoise

Porous stones that absorb chemicals and moisture. Clean only with a dry or very slightly damp cloth. Keep away from perfume, hairspray, and any chemical products entirely. Store away from heat and direct sunlight.

Lab-grown Stones

Identical in chemical composition to natural stones — care for them exactly as you would their natural equivalents. Lab diamonds are as hard and durable as mined diamonds; lab sapphires are equally tough.
