Everyday wear

Jewelry should be the last thing you put on and the first thing you take off. Perfume, lotion, hairspray and household cleaners can dull metal and film over stones, so let those settle before your piece goes on.

Take it off for the gym, gardening, cleaning and swimming. Chlorine and saltwater are hard on gold alloys and can loosen settings over time, and a hard knock is the most common cause of a bent prong or chipped stone.

Cleaning at home

For most pieces, soak for a few minutes in warm — not hot — water with a drop of mild dish soap, brush gently with a soft toothbrush behind and around the stone, rinse, and pat dry with a lint-free cloth.

• Gold & platinum: the warm-water-and-soap method keeps them bright. A dedicated polishing cloth restores shine between cleanings.
• Silver: silver naturally tarnishes with air — a silver polishing cloth brings it back. Store it airtight to slow it down.
• Soft or porous stones — emeralds, opals, pearls and turquoise — should only be wiped with a damp cloth. Avoid soaking, ultrasonic cleaners and steam, which can damage them.

Storage

Store each piece separately in a soft pouch or a lined box. Diamonds and harder stones will scratch softer stones and metals if they're kept loose together. Lay necklaces flat or hang them so chains don't tangle or kink.

A yearly check

Once a year, have your piece looked over by a jeweler — prongs, clasps and settings loosen gradually with wear, and catching it early protects the stone. We're always happy to inspect and clean any piece we've made; just reach out.
